If you own a residential, commercial, or industrial property in the Houston, Texas area that is over forty years old than chances are you will be facing a major sewer repair in the near future. Unfortunately the sewer systems that were built back in the old days were made out of materials that tend to breakdown over time. For example, cast iron was the material of choice for sewer pipes at one time. Although the metal is super strong it rusts when exposed to water. Eventually the rusted areas turn into rotten spots, which completely reduce the structural integrity of the sewer pipes.
Manufacturers replaced cast iron with a clay tile material. Although clay is not negatively affected when exposed to water, the material tends to chip, crack, and break rather easily. That certainly is not a good feature for pipes that are buried underground as natural ground shifts and movement cause severe damage. In more recent times sewer pipe manufactures have turned to hard plastic PVC. The material is durable, flexible, and does not rust, rot, chip, crack, or break when exposed to underground conditions.
That being said, sectional Plastic PVC sewer pipes are best utilized in new construction applications as opposed to sewer repair. In order to replace parts of or even the entire sewer pipeline with the sectional plastic PVC pipes a large trench must be excavated. Since sewer pipelines are buried under landscaping and hardscaping the trench will likely destroy your lawn, flower and mulch beds, trees, driveway, walkway, patio, and or parking lot. Once a plumbing contractor digs the trench and makes the repair they fill in the hole and move onto the next job.
The property owner is responsible for having the landscaping and hardscaping replaced. This adds on to the cost and time that it takes for the sewer repair job to be one hundred-percent finished. It can take multiple weeks to complete the process from start to finish. The good news is that there is another sewer repair approach that relies on advanced plumbing technology as opposed to old school excavation methods. Sewer lining has been available in Houston, Texas for the past fifteen years or so.
It does not require the excavation of a large and destructive trench along the length of the sewer pipes. Instead a small access point is made at one end of the sewer pipeline. A high-tech machine uses the access point to line the interior surfaces of the sewer pipeline with a specially formulated wet epoxy resin. The epoxy resin cures in place, or hardens within a few hours after application. It forms a solid, impenetrable pipe liner or pipe within a pipe that in essence fixes any of the problems as listed above.
The new pipe liner allows the raw sewage and wastewater to flow in an uninterrupted manner. It also prevents any further damage from occurring to the existing sewer pipeline. The entire installation process takes as little as one day to complete from start to finish. That way your property will be functioning properly and things can get back to normal in no time at all. In addition, sewer lining will last for a minimum of fifty plus years and costs about fifty-percent less than the old school excavation method.
